Inaugural Edition: Made-from-Scratch Mondays

Hey guys. It's been a crazy couple of weeks. I have every intention of sharing some of the stuff we've been up to with you. And sharing some more Berlin pictures, of course!

In the mean time, I had a great idea. I've told you a little bit before about some of the ways I've been taking a hard look at our food and evaluating and playing around with ways to improve what we eat, while spending less money to do it. As part of that, I've recently challenged myself to learn to make something from scratch each week (or about each week). I've already got a pretty good head start on it, too. So I thought I would start sharing some of those things with you in a series. Welcome to Made-from-Scratch Mondays!

I thought I would kick off with a fun little example of how this is affecting our food intake on a real level. Jonny is working late tonight on a belligerent server, so Gav and I are on our own for the evening. Usually, when Jonny isn't home, I don't "make dinner." That is, I don't use up a meal from my meal plan when we're not all here to eat it. Gavrel and I either eat leftovers, or on-hand meals. Here's what we had tonight:

I had: A sandwich on homemade whole wheat sourdough bread with lettuce, tomato, and homemade hummus with carrots on the side. (Yes, the hummus was on my sandwich. A vegetarian friend tipped me off to this combo, and I've become a big fan!)

Gavrel had: A quesadilla on a homemade whole wheat tortilla with cheese, tomatoes, and homemade crock pot refried beans. He also had blueberries for dessert (not pictured). Blueberries are like crack at our house.

You'll notice there's no meat in this meal. Most nights, we do have meat in some form with dinner, but since my personal chicken challenge, I've been sticking with my one-meat weeks and been really happy with the results (and the budget). So tonight I am saving my meat for my meal plan and enjoying all the veggie yumminess with our homemade goodies! And over the coming weeks, I'll show you how I've been making all those goodies.

What have you made from scratch lately?
