The Other Woman

Once in a while, an obscure side of my personality takes over my life for periods of time. I like to call her "Crazy Do-it-Yourself-er Mama." A friend asked me recently if I'd always been super-domestic. The answer is no, but I HAVE always been a bit of an over-achiever looking for a challenge. And by a bit, I  might be downplaying it a little bit... Domesticity just happens to be the current outlet for that over-achiever-ness.

So what has this other woman been up to lately?

It started with bread. I haven't bought bread in over a month, because I've been making two loaves of whole wheat sour dough every week. It's taken some tweaking, since the recipe and starter I got weren't meant for wheat flour, but I think I've finally gotten it down.

Next came laundry soap. I've been reading about the merits of making your own laundry soap for a couple of years, and finally decided to try it. And hey, while I was at it, I threw in some fabric softener too!

It couldn't be easier, and I've been really happy with both of them. I think it's a trend that will continue in our house. Want to make your own?
Laundry Soap:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
1 bar Fels Naptha soap
Use one heaping tablespoon per load, or two for a really dirty load.
Fabric Softener:6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner
I made a half batch of this, and it fit perfectly into an empty fabric softener bottle. Use the same amounts you would of store-bought softener.

I happened to come across directions for homemade deodorant in my blog perusals about the time I ran out of my own deodorant. I was a little skeptical, because I've been using clinical strength antiperspirant for years. I sweat easily and a lot (weren't you dying to know that?). But the clinical strength stuff is expensive, and I had everything I needed to make my own already at home. A few weeks in, I've been pretty happy with it. Once in a while I feel like I'm a little wet, but I don't see any wetness and I don't smell. That's good enough for me! To make your own: equal parts baking soda and corn starch with enough coconut oil to mix it all together and make it deodorant consistency - that's it!

I also made some hummus the other day (a whole blender's worth - I put a lot in the freezer). Not that that's very exciting, but it's yummy. And Gavrel likes it!

Pizza crust has also been a bonus, because it's super easy! As long as I think about it at least an hour or two ahead of time, I can throw it together and get two 12-inch pizzas' worth. One of those is enough for the three of us, which means the rest of the crust goes in the freezer, and I don't have to remember ahead of time next time we want pizza! I found the recipe here, but I made it with whole wheat flour - despite her insistence that you must use bread flour. It does work fine.

BBQ Chicken Pizza - It's not round, but it was yummy!
I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting, but those are some biggies around here. What have you been do-it-yourself-ing lately?
