The Perfect Gift

My mom's love language is gifts. She spends a lot of time, effort, and thought making sure every gift is just right - for the person, the occasion, and the purpose. Even the wrapping is perfect and appropriate. For example, I still got birthday presents wrapped in ladybugs and ballet slippers at 27.

I don't think I ever truly understood or appreciated this until I grew up and started getting - and giving - gifts outside of our family. I suddenly realized that not everyone did gifts that way. And I missed it. I would open something from someone, and I wouldn't "get it." I would stress over the "just right" thing to get for someone else, and it wouldn't be nearly as big a deal to them as I had hoped. It was just something nice they did together - exchanging gifts. It wasn't perfect.

I've inherited some of this. I'm sure I will never be quite as good at it, or at wrapping them for that matter, as my mom. But I still strive to pick out something that is just right for everyone. I want presents to be meaningful, thoughtful, and pretty! I get so much joy from giving someone something that they really wanted or will truly use. I literally spend all year trying to come up with Jon's birthday presents.

With Christmas approaching, I'm in perfect gift mode. Being on a limited budget makes things that much more interesting. I have to figure out (most of the time) how to make that something perfect. Sometimes that makes it easier, but sometimes it's so much harder.

I guess I don't have much of a point here, except that I'm thankful for my mom's gift-giving super powers and I'm thinking almost constantly right now about what to give people for Christmas. And I suppose you can know that if you ever get a gift from me, I probably put a lot of thought into it - although I'm sure my mom could've come up with something infinitely more better-er.

What about you? How do you pick out gifts? What role does gift-giving play in your holiday traditions?
