Building Tradition

Last week, we had gotten a couple of pumpkins - mostly to take pictures with. I thought it would be a shame to not get pictures of Gavrel in the monkey costume with some pumpkins, and since we didn't make it to a pumpkin patch this year, I figured we should at least bring some home. (You can check out our pumpkin pictures here.)

Since we had too much to carry the night we bought them, I went out the next day (Halloween) to get the pumpkins from my car while Gav was napping. As I carried them in, my neighbor was sitting out on her balcony with her young daughter. I said hi, and we made some small talk.

"Are you going to carve your pumpkins?" she asked.

"I don't think I'm going to have time today. I might just carve them tomorrow and take pictures. Nobody will care that I carved them a day late. Did you get to carve pumpkins?"

"No," she said. "We've never done it before. We don't know how." (They are from Dehli, India.)

"Well, you should come over tomorrow, and we'll carve pumpkins together!"

She agreed, and the next day they came to carve pumpkins. Or pumpkin. I carved one while they watched. And then I sent it home with them. As I was finishing up, she commented, "Now we can carve pumpkins every year, and we'll always remember that you taught us how to do it!"

We tried to take a picture of the two kids together with the pumpkin, but Jaivi was more interested in looking at the screen on my camera. It was fun, either way!

Gavrel just wanted to hold the top.

Jaivi actually took this one - she was pointing at the screen and saying, "Mama, baby, pumpkin!" As she would touch the screen, the camera would take a picture.

These sweet neighbors are actually moving this week. I'm very sad, because I have had a lot of fun getting to know them. I was touched when Neeti said, "You can tell that Jaivi feels comfortable here because she feels welcome to explore. You can really feel the love in your home." Luckily, they are moving close-by, so we will still get to see them and spend time with them.

Thank you, Jesus, for sweet neighbor friends. Thank you, also, that they feel Your love in our home!

Will you pray with me for their move this week? Pray also for whoever moves into their apartment and that we would have a chance to get to know them as well.
