Just when you thought...

About a week ago I was holding our beagle, Nellie, while watching TV. She was being very sweet and snuggly, and it was irresistibly cute. I looked at her and said, "If only your first mommy knew what a good, sweet puppy you turned out to be! She never would've given you up. We got lucky!"

Last night Jon and I were doing dishes - I was washing, and he was drying and putting away. He stuck his head into the living room for a minute to check on the puppies, and then walked in there. All I heard was, "Ummm..." as he walked across the room, and then "Nellie!" I heard little puppy nails against the wood floor as she scurried away from him. "You sneaky little booger!" Jon continued.

At this point, I turned around and stuck my head in the living room to see what was going on. Jon came out of our bedroom with a ragged piece of plastic in his hand. "Hey honey," he asked, "How many of these Reese's mini Easter bunnies were left in this bag?"

"I never opened it." I answered.

"Oh." We both turned to look at the beagle, now sitting on the chair between us. She looked a little guilty, but mostly pleased with herself. There weren't even any foil wrappers leftover - it was a clean job.

Since we hadn't caught her in the act, we couldn't even really punish her. She did, however, spend the rest of the evening in the kennel; we were sure she was going to be sick overnight. She wasn't, but she was wired this morning!

If only your first mommy had known...
