You're giving a speech, right?

How many times have you heard that line used as a joke? I'll tell you how often - often enough to assume it's always a joke.

This past weekend I was asked to do a "Taste of Two Rivers" event at church. It's a chance for new visitors to meet the staff of the church, hear a little bit about what each ministry is about, and ask any questions they may have. Granted, I've only been here for a little over a week, but I figured I could do a meet-and-greet kind of thing.

I had to laugh when I showed up, because I didn't know who was new, and who was helping serve lunch! So, I finally just started introducing myself to everyone. It was fine. I got some lunch, had a seat, and enjoyed some smalltalk over my sandwich.

As lunch was winding down, the new Pastor of Families leaned over and asked, "You're giving a speech, right?" I laughed, waved my hand, and gave a sarcastic little "of course!" He just nodded and said "Good."

It took me a second to realize he was serious.

Being the only staff person representing Middle School Ministries, it was my job to stand up, microphone in hand, and give a rundown of what we do, who we are, our goals, and what the year ahead looks like. I as the other staff people took their turns, I quickly scrambled for something to say. By the time my turn came around, I think I gave a pretty coherent picture of Middle School at 2RC. I got compliments from the previous middle school pastor, and again this morning from the high school pastor, so it must have been ok.

Although, I've learned to never again assume that question is a joke...
